Did you know?

  • The term 'birdie', meaning one stroke under Par on a given hole, comes from the 19th century American slag term "bird", meaning anything excellent.
  • The term 'eagle', meaning two strokes under Par on a given hole, is a natural extension from 'birdie' as an Eagle is a "big birdie."
  • The standard score for the number of strokes on a given hole is now known as Par. However, the original term, created in 1890, was the 'ground score.'
  • The term 'bogey' now means one stroke over Par on a given hole. However, in 1892, the term was used to describe an excellent golfer and was the standard score for each hole (now known as 'Par.').
